Nile University’s School of Biotechnology today announced the successful launch and conclusion of the first season of CrocTank, Egypt’s first dedicated Biotech Pitch Competition. This initiative is designed to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and market-ready solutions, inspiring the next generation of scientists to commercialize innovations that address pressing challenges in healthcare, food security, and environmental sustainability.

Egypt’s biotechnology sector is rapidly expanding, with investments in R&D projected to reach $500 million by 2030, yet faces hurdles in translating lab discoveries into scalable businesses. CrocTank addresses this by providing a structured platform for early-stage entrepreneurs, drawing on Nile University’s expertise in interdisciplinary research and entrepreneurship. The competition attracted promising teams from across the country, focusing on high-impact areas such as precision medicine, crop resilience technologies, and sustainable bioprocessing.

The event unfolded over key phases, beginning with an engaging Pitch Lecture to equip participants with essential storytelling and investor-engagement skills. This was followed by a tailored training workshop, where finalists honed their business models, prototypes, and pitches under guidance from seasoned mentors. The culmination was a dynamic final showcase, where teams presented before a distinguished panel of judges, evaluating criteria including innovation novelty, feasibility, market potential, and societal benefits.

The judging panel comprised global and local leaders in biotech and entrepreneurship:

• Dr. Martin Rotmann, Assistant Dean for Medical Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Dell Medical School, University of Texas at Austin;
• Eng. Ahmed Saleh, Executive Director of Nile University’s Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Competitiveness Centre (IECC);
• Dr. Sherif Aboul-Hadid, Co-founder of BioDAR LTD and Assistant Professor at Nile University;
• Mohamed Almoatasem, Co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer of AlProtein startup.

Winners were selected for their potential to drive real-world change, with prizes enabling further development and prototyping. The competition not only awarded financial support but also connected victors to Nile University’s broader ecosystem, including incubation resources and investor networks, projecting the creation of at least 50 new biotech jobs within the next two years.

The competition’s structure emphasizes a phased progression to build venture readiness:

• Preparation Phase: Pitch Lecture and ideation sessions to conceptualize biotech ideas with commercial viability.
• Development Phase: Intensive workshop for refining prototypes, financial models, and pitch decks.
• Showcase Phase: Final presentations with expert feedback, leading to awards and acceleration opportunities.

Early outcomes suggest CrocTank could accelerate 10+ startups annually, contributing to Egypt’s Vision 2030 by boosting R&D commercialization rates from 15% to 40% and fostering cross-sector partnerships.
