Nile University today unveiled the Agri-Tech Hackathon, a dynamic collaboration with Entlaq Holding hosted under the Ready for Tomorrow initiative. This nine-day program at Nile University’s Sheikh Zayed campus is designed to catalyze breakthroughs in agri-tech, equipping participants with resources to prototype solutions that bolster Egypt’s agricultural resilience. With agriculture employing over 25% of the workforce and contributing 11% to GDP, yet facing threats from erratic weather patterns and resource depletion, the hackathon targets high-impact areas such as AI-driven irrigation, bio-fertilizers, and supply chain digitization.
Drawing from global trends and local needs, the event features hands-on workshops, mentorship from industry leaders, and pitch sessions judged by experts in sustainability and agribusiness. It aligns with Egypt’s National Climate Change Strategy, emphasizing low-carbon farming and waste minimization to reduce the sector’s 14% share of national greenhouse gas emissions. Participants—ranging from students and entrepreneurs to researchers—will tackle real-world problems through team-based challenges, with winning ideas gaining seed funding, incubation support, and market access opportunities.
The launch highlights the power of public-private-academic partnerships in driving innovation. Entlaq Holding, a leader in investment and development, brings financial expertise and ecosystem connections, while NU IECC provides cutting-edge facilities like innovation labs and prototyping tools. Early projections indicate the hackathon could spawn 10+ viable startups, potentially increasing farm productivity by 20-30% through adopted technologies and creating 500+ jobs in the green agri-sector over the next five years.
“The Agri-Tech Hackathon is a game-changer for Egypt’s future farmers. By uniting bold ideas with practical support, we’re equipping innovators to combat climate challenges head-on, ensuring food security and sustainable growth for generations,” said Eng. Ahmed Saleh, Executive Director of NU IECC.
“At Entlaq Holding, we believe in investing in tomorrow’s solutions today. This partnership with Nile University amplifies our commitment to agri-tech, turning innovative concepts into scalable ventures that uplift rural communities and drive economic inclusion,” noted representatives from Entlaq Holding during the announcement.
The hackathon unfolds in structured phases to maximize outcomes:
- Ideation and Teaming (Days 1-3, November 30-December 2): Kickoff sessions on problem identification, team formation, and foundational training in agri-tech tools like IoT sensors and data analytics.
- Prototyping and Mentorship (Days 4-6, December 3-5): Intensive development with expert guidance, access to Nile University’s tech labs, and feedback loops on sustainability metrics.
- Pitching and Awards (Days 7-9, December 6-8): Final presentations, judging by a panel including MOA officials and investors, culminating in awards and networking for scaling.
Recommendations for applicants include forming diverse teams with tech and domain expertise, focusing on scalable prototypes with measurable environmental impact, and leveraging open-source resources for rapid iteration. The program encourages solutions aligned with SDGs 2 (Zero Hunger) and 13 (Climate Action), with virtual participation options to broaden reach.
